Steps to follow when dealing with a brain or spinal injury

  1.  ASSESS THE SITUATION – Remain calm at the scene of the accident.  Make sure there is no potential for additional injury.  If the incident occurred on the roadway, make sure that traffic is diverted from the accident scene.
  2. ADMINISTER MEDICAL ATTENTION - Keep the person who has suffered the injury immobile.  Do not attempt to reposition the head or neck.  If the person’s head or neck is tilted at an awkward angle, assume they have suffered a spinal injury.
  3. SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IMMEDIATELY – Brain and spinal injuries can be very delicate.  The slightest bit of movement can cause a more severe injury.  It is critical to make sure that trained medical personnel arrive as quickly as possible to render treatment.
  4. CONTACT LAW ENFORCEMENT – Be sure to call the police and wait until they arrive at the accident scene.  Make sure that the officer writes a report.  Cooperate with law enforcement and clearly explain the facts of the accident.
  5. BEGIN COLLECTING INFORMATION – Make sure to get the names, telephone numbers and addresses of any witnesses.  Also write down any comments or statements of witnesses or others involved in the accident.
  6. VISIT YOUR DOCTOR – Some brain and spinal injuries are not readily evident.  The results of the injury can take hours, even days to occur.  If you are experiencing headaches, blurred vision, memory loss or soreness in the neck and back area, seek medical attention immediately.  If you delay, the injuries could become more severe.
  7. REPORT THE INCIDENT TO YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY – Contact your agent and give them the details of the accident.  Find out if your policy has a Personal Injury Protection provision.  If it does, let your attorney know.
  8. CONTACT YOUR ATTORNEY – If you have been injured, you should consult with a personal injury attorney for advice.  You can contact the Brain and Spinal Injury Attorneys at Norris & Cantu for representation and advice in regards to your injuries.
  9. PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS – Be aware that you have rights.  Also be aware that when you have legal representation from Norris & Cantu, you don’t have to talk to the insurance adjusters.  You tell them you have hired the Houston Personal Injury Attorneys of Norris & Cantu and any further correspondence should be referred to them.
  10. DOCUMENT THE SCENE – Whenever possible, it is always important to take photographs of the accident scene.  While it is always better to use a digital camera, a camera phone will work if that is all that is available.  If you have photographic documentation, it will speak louder than words.
